Tree Pruning in Adelaide
Expert pruning that keeps your trees healthy, structurally sound, and safe, without over-cutting or damaging long-term growth.
Proper Pruning Makes a Real Difference
There's a significant difference between arborist pruning and simply lopping branches off a tree. Done correctly, pruning improves a tree's structure, removes hazards, encourages healthy growth, and can extend the life of the tree by decades. Done badly, as is common with unqualified operators, it can create new hazards, introduce disease, and cause long-term decline.
At Superior Tree and Stump, we apply Australian Standard AS 4373 practices to every pruning job. That means proper cut placement to promote healthy wound closure, removal of structurally unsound or dead material, and an understanding of how each species responds to different pruning approaches.
We offer structural pruning for young trees, dead-wooding for mature specimens, crown lifting where clearance from buildings or fences is needed, and canopy thinning to improve light and airflow.
What's Involved
Assessment & Scope of Work
We inspect the tree's structure, health, and surroundings. We advise on what pruning is appropriate and explain why, you'll know exactly what we're doing before we start.
Pruning Work
Using correct technique and sharp equipment, we remove dead, damaged, or structurally problematic growth. We never remove more than 30% of the canopy in a single visit.
Cleanup
All pruned material is chipped or removed. Your yard is blown and raked clean before we leave.
Why Prune Properly
The Value of a Qualified Arborist
Healthier Trees, Longer Life
Correct pruning promotes strong structure and reduces the risk of disease entry. Trees that are pruned well regularly live significantly longer than those left alone or poorly managed.
Reduced Hazard Risk
Dead branches and structurally weak limbs can fall without warning. Regular dead-wooding and structural pruning significantly reduces the risk to your family, home, and neighbours.
Better Light & Outlook
Crown thinning and selective pruning can dramatically improve natural light to your home, reduce overshadowing of gardens, and improve the overall appearance of your property.
Common Questions
Tree Pruning FAQs
When is the best time to prune trees in Adelaide?
For most species in Adelaide, late winter to early spring (July–September) is ideal, trees are still dormant or just breaking dormancy, wounds close more quickly, and there's less risk of pest or disease entry. However, dead-wooding and hazard removal can be done at any time of year. We'll advise the best timing for your specific tree species during your quote.
What's the difference between pruning and lopping?
Pruning refers to selective removal of branches according to Australian Standard AS 4373, with each cut made at a natural branch union to encourage healthy regrowth. Lopping is indiscriminate cutting that leaves large stubs, exposes heartwood to rot, and often leads to weak regrowth and long-term tree decline. As a qualified arborist, we only carry out proper pruning, we don't lop.
Do I need council approval to prune my tree?
In many cases, moderate pruning doesn't require council approval. However, significant pruning of protected or significant trees in certain Adelaide council areas may require notification or approval. The rules vary by council and tree type. We check all of this as part of our quote process and advise you clearly before any work begins.
