Stump Grinding in Adelaide

Get rid of that unsightly or hazardous stump for good. We grind to below ground level and leave your yard clean and ready to use.

Why Grind the Stump?

Left in the ground, tree stumps are a tripping hazard, a mowing obstacle, a potential source of root regrowth, and an invitation for termites and other wood-boring insects. They also make it impossible to replant, pave, or use the area properly.

Stump grinding is the most effective and least disruptive removal method. A stump grinder reduces the stump and major surface roots to woodchip in a matter of minutes, without the need for excavation or chemicals. The resulting hole can be backfilled with the woodchip mulch (great for the garden) or with soil if you're planning to replant or pave.

We can grind stumps immediately after tree removal or come back at a later date to address existing stumps, including stumps from trees removed years ago.

What's Involved

Locate Underground Services

Before grinding, we check for underground utilities near the stump. It's your responsibility to know their location, but we'll discuss this with you before starting.

Grinding

We grind the stump to approximately 200–300mm below ground level, deep enough to allow for lawn, garden bed, or paving above. Major surface roots are also ground back.

Backfill & Cleanup

The resulting woodchip can be left in the hole as mulch, raked out over nearby garden beds, or removed from site. Your choice, we discuss it before we start.

3 Good Reasons to Remove That Stump

Eliminate Trip Hazards

Tree stumps are a hazard for kids, elderly family members, and visitors. Removing them completely, below lawn height, makes your yard safe and easy to maintain.

Prevent Root Regrowth

Some species will repeatedly reshoot from the stump. Grinding removes enough of the root mass to stop this happening, no more hacking at suckers every few weeks.

Use the Space Again

Once the stump is gone, the area is yours. Plant a new tree, lay turf, install a garden bed, or pave it over. Grinding gives you a clean slate to work with.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How deep does stump grinding go?

We typically grind to approximately 200–300mm below ground level. This is sufficient for lawn re-establishment, garden beds, or most paving applications. If you're planning to lay a concrete slab or need deeper grinding for specific landscaping, let us know and we'll discuss options. The depth also depends on the stump size and species.

Will the tree grow back after stump grinding?

Stump grinding removes the above-ground stump and the major surface roots, which eliminates the primary source of regrowth for most species. Deeper roots may occasionally produce suckers but these become progressively weaker over time as the root system loses energy. Some aggressive species like liquid amber may require follow-up treatment, which we can advise on after seeing your specific situation.

What happens to the woodchip and sawdust?

You have three options: leave the woodchip in the hole to decompose naturally over 6–12 months (ideal if you plan to lawn over it), rake it out over garden beds as mulch, or have us remove it from site. We discuss your preference before starting. Note that the woodchip is not ideal to use as garden mulch if the tree had a disease, we'll advise you if that's the case.
